Swami Vivekananda is one of the most
eminent personalities of our country.
He was born on the 12th of
January,1863 in Calcutta’s Shimla palli.His father was Biswanath Dutta,an
attorney of Calcutta High Court and his mother was Bhubaneshwari.His original
name was Narendranath Dutta.But he had a shorter name –“Bilay”.Bilay was a
meritorious student.
He studied Sanskrit,the Ramayana,the
Mahabharata,the Puranas etc.He learnt things very quickly.
After having done his Matriculation
from Metropolitan Institution, Calcutta in 1879, he appeared for the F.A
in1881and then the B.A in 1884 from the Scottish Church College. He was
handsome and bold. He gained mastery over English language and proved to be an
eloquent orator..
He lost his father in his youth. The
year 1886 was a turning point in his life.He came in close contact with Sri
Ramkrisna Paramhamsa and was greatly attached by him.On the request of Sri
Ramkrisna Paramhamsa,he sang some devotional songs.
He took Sanyas and appeared as
Vivekananda on the stage of Indian History Of Reformation. He is known for his
inspiring speech at the parliament of the world’s Religions at Chicago on 11th
September,1893 and there by established Hinduism as the mother of all faiths.In
1897 ,he established the Ramkrisna Mission and in 1898,the Belur Math.
Swami
Vivekananda said that the youth of the day were moving without any aim. There
was no correct spiritual guidance. He felt that religion can lead a man on the
moral and righteous path.He believed that all man of the world are one. He
felt that there is a lot to be achieved. He advised the youth to move forward.
His words were: “arise, Awake and stop not till the goal is reached”.He
dedicated all his life for the upliftment of the poor,distressed and
untouchables.
On
July 4,1902,at an early age of 39 Swamiji passed away.But his words will
continue to guide us through the hardships of the practical world.Today Swamiji
is our guiding spirit towards the ideal.
