In
the year 1861,was born a child in the
Tagore family of Jorasanko in Calcutta.He was Rabindranath. His father Devendranath
Tagore was a rich man and an aristocrat and his mother was Sarada Devi. He
belonged to a very prosperous and cultured zamindar family which played a very
important role in shaping his personality in later life. He was the eighth
son and fourteenth child of his parents. Tagore was not sent to any school. He
was educated at home by a tutor. When he was at seventeen, he was sent to
England for formal schooling but he was not happy, getting educated within the
four walls. He was a curious and creative child. His poetic intellect was
perceptible from his early boyhood. He was happy to read plays of Kalidas and
Shakespeare.He had a special interest in Bengali, which was his mother tongue.Later
he became a student of prof. Henry Morley whose lectures influenced Rabindranath to take interest in
English literature.
His
first opera was |Bhanu Singher Padabali
which created a great sensations and brought him to the limelight.Then
he started writing poetr y in Bengali.After that his literary career saw
numerous ventures into the worlds of novels,dramas,short stories and songs.
He
married Mrinalini Devi who inspired him
to a great extent to pursue his work.”Gitanjali”
is a well known collection of his poems.Gitanjali contains his various noble thoughts common to the vast
humanity,pessimism,love,satisfaction,dignity
of labour etc.For this book “Gitanjali”,Rabindranath Tagore was awarded
the Noble prize in 1931.Tagore was the first Indian to get a Noble prize .He was a great
supporter of the Indian Nationalist Movement.
He
was himself a good singer of and he composed a new form of music called “Rabindra
Sangeet”.He wrote a number of plays .Some of them are Valmiki Pratibha,Post
Office,Naure’s Revenge etc.
He
was a great reformer of
education.Santiniketan and Sriniketan stand today as its evidence.He was a
great philosopher and a teacher.He was called “Gurudev”by all.In 1941 ,the
world lost one of its greatest poet,social thinker.But even today Tagore
appears in our everydaylife at every step.
